UNITAR's Green Development and Climate Change Programme (GCP) develops the capacities of individuals and training institutions in developing countries to advance green and climate resilient development in support of Agenda 2030 and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Programme offers a range of services, including executive training, capacity development for education and training institutions, support for national learning strategies, learning methodology development, and knowledge-sharing. Activities are carried out through partnerships with other UN organizations, bilateral development partners, as well as leading learning institutions and think tanks.
In the area of e-learning, GCP offers courses in the areas of climate change, sustainable consumption and production, and green economy. All online courses follow the latest methodologies and apply highest standards in the area of adult learning. They have clearly defined learning objectives, include an assessment of learning and the possibility to receive a certificate, and provide participants with the possibility to provide feedback on the training received. The courses are always accompanied by a syllabus with detailed information on content and methodology as well as technical requirements. GCP’s assistance is available to all course participants through a dedicated support team.
Courses are designed by GCP’s instructional design and e-learning specialists in collaboration with experts in the specific areas. Specialized software (such as Storyline, Photoshop and InDesign) is used to enhance the learning experience through interactive features and a user-friendly, attractive design.
The e-course “” is delivered within the framework of PAGE (Partnership for Action on Green Economy), a joint initiative between UNITAR, UNEP, ILO, and UNIDO. It is a state-of the art virtual learning course, which introduces participants to different concepts and facets of the green economy, as well as the global, national and sector-specific challenges and opportunities associated with the green transition. Additionally, participants developed basic skills for applying the green economy concept in practical context. The course is interactive and each participant develops a green economy action plan, which is peer-reviewed by other participants. To date more than 500 government officials, representatives from academia, the civil society and the private sector from more than 80 countries were successfully trained. Feedback from participants shows that more than 95% of participants are likely to use the information acquired in the course and more than 90% would recommend it to a colleague. In December 2013 the course was awarded the ECB Check Certificate, an internationally recognized standard on quality of e-learning education.
The e-learning course “Introduction to Sustainable Consumption and Production in Asia” is developed jointly by UNEP and UNITAR, within the framework of the SWITCH-Asia Programme. This is the first e-learning course of its kind and is developed specifically for the Asia-Pacific context. The course is designed to assist policymakers and other stakeholders from the region in developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating policies supporting a transition towards SCP.
Following interest from other regions UNITAR and UNEP have scaled-up this partnership, with the goal of delivering more dedicated regional trainings on SCP. The first e-learning course with focus on Asia is currently being adapted to the context of the African and Latin American regions. A total of three regional course on SCP will be delivered in English, Spanish and French language throughout 2016.
